Previously on our blog, we discussed the importance of fire safety training and basic fire safety in your home. But today we want to share with you business fire safety, how you can keep your business safe in the event of a fire as this is much different to your home safety.
Firstly, let’s discuss when a fire is discovered. As a lot of businesses are in larger buildings, it is more likely for a worker or customer to discover the fire before any smoke detectors sound. Now, to keep everyone safe all you need to do is sound the fire alarm. This will alert everyone that there is a fire in the building and should evacuate. The person who sounded the fire alarm should also evacuate the building, if they wish to try to battle the fire they should only do so if they feel fully capable and will not be placing themself in danger.
Your business will need to have a clear evacuation route planned for in the event of a fire, as well as a meeting point where all workers will know where to go and where to direct others to. This is essential for businesses because it helps you know that everyone is safe once you reach the evacuation point.
Another aspect that you will need to consider is your fire doors and escape routes. It can be easy to place items in front of these emergency exits but we need you to stop doing this. Whilst the doors may not be in use every day, it is important that they are kept clear for if they ever do need to be used in the event of a fire. The last thing you want is people trying to escape but the route is blocked.
